In class we have been learning about friction. In the "Shoe Lab" you were asked how friction can be helpful and how it can be harmful (detrimental). Now let's take it a step further. Think about what it really means for there to be friction and answer the questions below - let's have another discussion.
What would our world be like (how would it be different) if there were NO friction? Would anything be the same? How would we get around? How would we build things? What would it be similar to? Explain what you think our world would be like.
Make this into a discussion. Read all of the comments prior to making your comment. Add to comments, expand on points made, disagree (respectfully) and build up an idea, as a set of Physics 1 classes, of what our world would be like. Feel free to pose new questions as they come up. If you post the same thing as someone else you will not get credit for your post. Make sure you include your name and class period in your post. Enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteIf our world today had no friction, it would be a completely different world. Nothing would be the same, it would be nearly impossible to move without friction. You would need a force of reaction to move. You would have to push off another object to move, this would be very similar to space, and how you need to push off the spaceship walls to move. You cant just start swimming in the air.

A world without friction is a totally different world than our's today. It would be equivalent to walking or driving on oil-covered slippery ice. Or like walking on a treadmill. In other words, you wouldn't be able to move by walking or driving places. But you wouldn't be able to "float" because gravity is still holding you down. It would be impossible to walk, run or drive. In order to move, you would have to push off a SECURE object that's in the ground (wall etc...). But once you force movement on yourself in a frictionless environment, you could be going on forever until you held on to another secure object. It would be extremely hard to move from one place to another. We would have to build things that are staked into the ground so we could push off and travel around. We would be slipping everywhere. Lots of activities we do like sports would be eliminated because of the absence of friction. I would not like this world at all.
A world without friction would be a very different world. Friction is what gets us to be able to move or stop on our own. Without it, the only way to get around would either by constantly moving with out a way to stop, or by not being able to move. Buildiung would be impossible, because you either couldn't move to the object, or not able to stop to pick it up. It would be similar to being on ice, because it is hard to move on, and when you get moving, it is hard to stop on. A world that limmits my choice tom move on is not one I'd wish to be on.
ReplyDeleteIf there wasn't friction it would be impossible to live. We need friction to move. We have to push off of the ground with our feet. If there was nothing to stop your foot when you push off then you would just slip and fall. It is like a slip and slide. The water breaks your friction so it makes it easier to slide and harder to walk on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Liam's statement that it would not be possible to build anything without friction. That is a big constraint in creating forms of transportation or other structures. The bricks or materials used wouldn't stay in place. I think an example of a frictionless world would be snowboarding down a mountain. Once the force is exerted at the top of the mountain, the board slides down on the snow. It would be like that in a frictionless world because once a froce is exerted, you would keep sliding until another force stops you. This would be a very dificult world. If you fall and your nowhere near anyhing to stop you, you will keep sliding. Also, there wouldn't be much to do. Sports wouldn't be the same along with other activities. This is my perseption of a frictionless world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jennifer it would be impossible to live and like what Liam said "Building would be impossible, because you either couldn't move to the object, or not able to stop to pick it up." There would be no way to build a house because it would just 'move' on the grass no matter the weight. I think this would be a very difficult world. You would have to be strapped down in order to stay in one spot. Ice Skaters would kind of be the same because Ice has barley any friction.I would hate this world because cheerleading would not even be possible!

I also agree with Liam's statement of building things being impossible. Since there is no friction, the building particles would just slip off. You can not even hold onto anything because it'll just slip out of your hand. It would also be extremely difficult to balance. You would be slipping and falling so I believe that it would be impossible to move since we can't hold onto anything.

ReplyDeleteThe world would not be the same without friction because without it we wouldn't be able to move and stop. we would be fall all over the place. things wouldn't stay in in place, they would slip asround. we also wouldn't be able to balance well because your feet wont stay in the same place.

If there was no friction in the world it would be much different thatn today. How we transport from one place to another would be different. It would be very much like how it is in space. We would have to push of an object of some sort to get another place. Like Liam said it would be impossible to make or bulid anything. The world wouldn't be the same at all.

ReplyDeleteif the world didnt have friction, we wouldnt be able to live. we wouldnt be able to stop moving or start moving. you would be slipping anywhere you tried to move. so it would be virtually impossible to live if we didnt have friction.
The world would be different because noone would be able to stop themselves from moving unless they grabbed onto something. I dont think that anything would be the same becaseu we wouldnt be able to stand still. we would have to get around by pushing ourselves off an object in the direction of the place were going and then grab onto an object to stop. i think it would be impossible to build things. it would be similar to living on ice. Our world would be very hard to interact with people in.

ReplyDeleteA world without friction would be a world similar to the world we live in today, only a lot more difficult. Imagine yourself skating on an ice rink. how you are constantly slipping and sliding around. imagine your every movement like that only amplified. you see, even when you are ice skating you are still experiencing friction but it is not as much friction as you get by walking on concrete or even on tile. when you walked you would basically be sliding and the only way to stop would be if you were to grab onto someone or something. And even if you grab on to someone you are going to cause them to fall down and slide along with you.

A world with out friction would be very difficult and complicated. Our everyday simple things like walking would be near impossible to do. I believe that very little would be the same. Furniture would not be able to stay still on the ground because there would be no friction to the ground. Getting from place to place would be challenging as well if you walk there would be no friction moving you forward and if you try to dry there is no friction with the wheels of the car and the road so you would just slide. I think we would need to invent a new way to get around. We would possibly have to use slippery-ish shoes to get around. Instead of walking around, with out friction, we would probably have to glide around and to make gliding easier special made shoes would be helpful. It would be difficult to build things, but not impossible. Hitting a nail with a hammer would still be possible. However things on walls, like a t.v. for example, would be difficult to build onto the wall because no friction would be holding it up. We would need to create some thing that would make the t.v. stick to the wall instead of the normal brackets. Our world with out friction would be like an ice cube on granite, everything would slide all over the place.

I would like to expand on what Mike said in his post about buildings. It is very true that even modern structures, combining materials like steel and wood frames still wouldnt be able to stay together. The way a multi story building works is by building upon the lower level of the building and then up. However like Mike said if there was no fricition, then materials wouldnt hold together correctly and the structure would be weak and brittle.
The way that friction translates into trasnportation is key. I have been competing in Solo 1 auto x racing events ever since I was forteen. Friction plays ahuge role in determing the outcome of a event. The driver that can combine the best traction with the highest amount of possible speed in the corners is usually the winner. However this doesnt just play a role on the track it also exisits in our day to day comuting. In the winter one must drive much slower becuase the level of friction is much lower, do to the snow.

I agree with Adam D's comment. Nothing in this world would be the same with out friction. You wouldn't be able to walk to places like we normally do. You would have to push off of an object, most likely a wall, in order to move. But, since theres no friction in the environment, you could be going on forever until you hold onto another secure object. I also agree with what Alex H said. People woudln't be able to build buildings because they would just fall apart with out friction. In order for a building to stay balanced, its base needs to be the strongest and most well built part. Just like we saw with the marshmellow lab, if you didn't have a strong base, your tower would fall apart and collapse.

A world without friction would be very chaotic. There would be no slowing down, everything would be going at a fast pace. If we were walking we wouldnt be able to stop or slow down, if we were drving the same thing, the tires and the pavement wouldn't allow us to stop, if friction was nonexistent. Our everyday life would be so much more complicated. Getting one place from another would be easy but stopping when getting there would be inpossible. A world without friction would be like living in space. I say this because in space you just float there is nothing up there from keeping us from stopping. Because there is no friction that exist in outerspace thats how it would feel if there was no friction on earth. Trying to build buildings would be also be very hard, because there would be nothing from keeping the building standing still to the ground. Thats what it would be like with a world without friction.

ReplyDeleteA world without friction. Many people would say it would be impossible to do, and others would think it would possibly be fun to slide around. I would think it would be both hard and somewhat fun. Without fristion we would be able to get very far in our everyday life. It would be really hard to drive or ride a bike somwhere let alone walk. With friction we would slip all over the place and would not be able to get far. If you drove you would just slide and crash. Same with riding a bike. I think a world without friction would be both fun, bad and it would get annoying after awhile.

i agree with dan s. a world without friction would be fun but somewhat challanging at the same time. it would take some getting used to and we wouldnt be able to do as much things as we have done in a world of friction. even though some objects use less friction than others, it would still be impossible for those less frictional things to move. we would be stuck in some of the same places for a long time. and also like how adam d said, if we forced ourselves to move off of other things, we wouldnt be able to stop unless we found something else that would stop us from moving forward. it would be fun to see how the world would work without having friction!

I agree with dan s and beth. A world without friction be fun at times! we could slide around place to place and have random poles sticking out of the ground to stop, but at the same time, how would we drive? or have a cross country team?We need friction in our world to live. We need to be able to stop our cars to not run into each other, we need to be able to walk without sliding all the time. We need to have our runners race to the finish line themselves, not having something else to stop them. We wouldn't be able to be independent because we would have to rely on other things to make us move and stop.

A world without friction would have its pros and cons. It would be fun at some points, but most of the time it would be hard to get around from place to place. Everything kind of needs friction. We need friction to walk, cars need friction to move, pencils need friction to write. Building things would be difficult considering nothing would stay together becuase of no friction. It would all just fall apart. I think that have no friction would be somewhat like a bowling alley. when you roll a bowling ball down the bowling alley it just goes until it hits the pins. If the pins werent in the way to stop the bowling ball the ball would keep on going and going for a long time. A world like that would be hard to live in. We need friction part of our lives.

I agree with Christina K. A world without friction would be hard to get around form place to place because everything needs frictions. We wouldn't be able to stop moving either. (Unless another object stopped us, but that object wouldn’t be place on the ground because there is no friction). We wouldn't rug burns in a world with out friction which would be nice, but with out friction we wouldn’t be able to control our speed or even move at all if we weren’t moving. And if we were moving we wouldn’t be able to stop. This is why friction is so important.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Adam D and Dan S. Although there's a slim chance of a frictionless world being fun, that world would basically be horrible. Like Adam said, most sports would be eliminated and we wouldn't be able to use any sources of our usual transportation. Friction is necessary because as beings, we need to be able to move (without sliding around)and also be able to monitor our speed and our own personal accelerations (without having to push off of something stable). Friction is incredibly important and in a world without it, things would NOT be good.
I agree with Evan G. Without friction how would we be able to walk? When we walk our shoes make friction between the floor and our soles of the shoe. When we push our feet backward it allows us to move forward. If we push our feet forward it would allow us to move backwords. Without friction we wouldn't be able to move our feet forward or backwords. We would be slidding all around. How would we even be able to move at all? Friction is used in almost everything even when you swim. This is why we need friction and why we wouldn't be able to move around without it.

I agree with Adam D, in a world without friction, we wouldn't get very far, and gravity would be pulling us down to earth, so it wouldn't be like space were we would just be able to float around. we would have have to be moved or stopped by another object or person, it would be very difficult to have any control over where you go, or how fast you go. i also agree with Liam when he said that it would be impossible to build anything with out friction. everything would just slip and slide and nothing would stay in place

Without friction in our world, living would be almost impossible to do. We wouldn't be able to build things because there would be no way to keep something in one spot or be able to work on making something because you would be continuously sliding all over the place. Also, it would be physically exhausting to try to move around and get places. you would have to push off of walls and other objects in order to slide from place to place. You wouldn't be bale to control any of your movement. A world without friction would basically be like we're living on an ice rink. I don't think a world without friction would be fun to live in at all.
A world without friction would be very diffrent. It would be diffrent because if you were moving it will be very hard to stop moving because friction wouldn't be there to stop you. a frictionless world would be really hard to live in and do anthing.

ReplyDeleteIf our world had no friction it would be a different world. It would be almost impossible to start walking. The only way to get around would to be pushing off other objects. If we were to build anything we would have to come up with new concepts. If we were asked to build new shoes for running that would almost be impossible. The shoe would most likely look like skate.
Life would be really hard without friction. It would be different because of friction we dont slide all over the place we can stand in one spot without moving. I don't think anything would be the same without friction. It would be really hard to get from place to place because you would have to slide from place to place because there would be no other way to get around.I don't think it would be possible to build things. Without friction our world would be really messed up and I don't think it would work.

A world without friction would be a world where we couldn't walk or run or really do any physical activity where its possible to go in one direction. We would need to push off solid objects like big boulders, buildings, or anything else staked into the ground. If we ran into one another, then we could stop ourselves but that wouldn't be that smart of an idea. It would be like climbing up a hill where there is only ice and you keep trying to get some grip so you won't fall. That's basically happening when there is no friction. We just slide everywhere.

A world without friction is hard to imagine. Not only would we not be able to walk or do any sort of physical activity on the ground, but we wouldn't be able to do anything with our hands. We also wouldn't be able to pick up an object or write. I agree that everything would slide, because nothing would be able to rub against any surface. For example, somebody playing an orchestral instrument, (violin,) wouldn't have a way to run the bow across the strings. It would slide off, and as a result no sound would be produced.

ReplyDeleteA world with out friction? To be honest it would very hard to move and get to places you would have to push yourself off of an object to even move a little. I cant imagine it, I wouldn't even know how we would build house.

ReplyDeleteIf we were in a frictionless world would we be moving fast or slowly?
