Working conditions in space

Here on Earth, we often don't even think about Newton's 3rd Law of Motion - it's just the way things are. If we turn a wrench one way, we don't worry about the effects of that on ourselves. However, in space there is virtually no gravity and Newton's 3rd law can be a VERY big deal.

Why might Newton's 3rd law be something that we really need to consider?
What could go wrong if we don't take time to think about its effects?
How does it make working harder?
Are there any ways that it makes working easier?

Watch the video below, for an idea of how all of this comes together.  (Only press the view button - you can't download it).

Again make this a discussion, work off of each other's comments. :-) Don't forget your name and class period!

Anywhere we are, when we apply force to something, the object apply force back on to us. On earth, because of gravity, we don't notice it as much. When we turn something, our feet stay on the ground. In space, since there is no gravity, when we turn something, our whole body would go with it. If you were building something, you would not get anything done. Things would be very difficult then.

Newtons 3rd law says that if a force is applied to something, that object will apply an equal amount of force back. So almost everything we do can relate to the newtons 3rd law. This is really important because with out this law, it would make everything extremely difficult to do. We wouldn't have enough energy to do anything. Newtons 3rd law can make things easier, for example if a person was walking across the floor, and the floor didn't apply an equal force back, the person walking would just fall right through the floor. We can count on Newtons 3rd law to help us do necessary tasks without any problems.

Working in space sounds like it would be fun to me. But once I think about it, it would be really hard. I learned that there is no gravity in space to it would be kinda hard to move around and work. Then again it would also be easy because you could pass tools to other people by just throwing them. Also you would be able to push yourself around to where you need to go. I think it would be really fun to work in space.

  4. Space has no gravity as we all know but one thing we all dont realize is that with no gravity you cant accomplish most of our normal day tasks, such as something so simple as walking. The 3rd law says that when we apply a force to an object, that object applies force right back. With no gravity no work could be done because simply you need friction and mass and gravity to accomplish most common tasks

Newtowns Thrid Law is something that should definitly not be overlooked. Since this law says that if a force is applied to something, that object will apply an equal amount of force back. If there is no force pushing back, then that makes working, like working in space, very difficult. Like the astronuat in the video said, controling your boddy in these working condition is very hard to do and takes a lot more effort. You need to be able to conrtole your body and finish your job at the same time. on earth, we can control our actions becuase of gravity, but in space it is a completely different story.

  7. John O. Newtons 3rd law states that an object that exerts force onto another, the other object will apply the same force onto the first object. When the astronauts were in space, the man was trying to wrench something but it wouldnt work because the wrench would apply the same force back. When there is gravity, there is not enough force from the wrench to lift us off the ground, unlike in space.

  8. When we consider newton's laws we have to think about how it affects our world and will allow us to be safer in our everyday living. we can see the physical consequences of our actions. We can analyze the damage of the colisions and accidents we see and then motivate ourself to avoid these accidents and better understand that when a force is applied an equal and opposite force will be initiated. It can help us understand car accidents and assaults. It makes work harder in the fact that we have to apply more force to an object to perform a task but when we apply the force. This law may not make work easier but it is nessecary to our understanding of the world around us.

I think Newton's 3rd law is a postulate that most of tend to look right over. Life without it would be extremely hard and we would have it to literally put everything we have into doing even simple tasks. For example, if you wanted to pound a hammer into a nail, it's nearly impossible since you would have to move your whole body with the hammer. At this rate, one would get extremely tired very quickly. Of course, when in zero gravity, things could be much easier to do since you can just float around, but handling tangible objects is where things get difficult. I think it would be beneficial if people started really thinking about Newton's 3rd Law and everything it allows us to do.

newtons third law is very important if we didnt have it we would fall through everything we wouldnt be able to walk or live even it makes things easier because we are able to stay standing and not just go right through something.

We would need to look a Newton's 3rd in a whole new way in space. Simple things like sleeping could change things. If you rolled over in your sleep and hit the wall you could float around the ship hitting things. If you forgot the effects of the third law you could make huge mistakes like my example above. It could make life harder by simple tasks like working, by turning a wench your whole body would move with that wench. It could make life easier by moving around. You could just push off a wall and fly around the ship.

most of the time we don't notice how much we need newtons 3rd law, but without it our lives would be so much more difficult. playing a simple game of catch would send you flying in the opposite direction. it would be very hard to do much of anything without newtons 3rd law. even though the thought of flying around in zero gravity seems fun, i believe it would get boring after a while, and it would make our everyday lives so much harder.

Newtons 3rd Law is something we need to considers because without it we would not be able to move around. As Matt E. said "If you forgot the effects of the third law you could make huge mistakes..." If we overlooked the existence of the third law we wouldn't realize that when we hit an object there is a force that is the reaction of the object we hit.

  14. This is Ciara G. in period 1-2a.

Newton's Third Law is a basic necessity we need in our everyday lives. Action Reaction. Action:we put our foot on the ground and push back , Reaction: the ground pushes us forward. Without the Third Law things would be next to impossible to do anything. I remember once discussing in class how astronauts are very weak once coming back from outer space. It was mentioned oh with out gravity there is no normal force acting against the astronaut when trying to a task such as screwing in something. Without normal force there is just a action without a reaction.

  15. Working in space would make tasks such as moving at a constant speed easier, although that is not something a lot of people need to do out their.
